In Ply, you can easily assign technicians or any other users in your account to specific jobs, ensuring that tasks are properly managed and tracked. Follow the steps below to get started!
➡️ How to Assign a Technician to a Job?
1️⃣ Go to the Jobs Section
Open the Ply app or web version.
Navigate to the Jobs tab.
2️⃣ Select the Job You Want to Assign
Click on the desired job and then go to the three dots > Edit:
3️⃣ Assign a Technician
Locate the Assign technicians field.
Click on it and select the technician from the list of available users.
You can also assign multiple techs to the same job.
If 2+ technicians are assigned, Ply can't determine which truck to pull materials from, and inventory falls back to the default warehouse instead of the correct truck. See How Inventory Location Response works in Ply and Understanding Response Locations, we recommend assigning only one technician per job for accurate inventory deduction.
➡️ Save the Info
Confirm your selection and save the changes.
💡 Not sure what a specific user can or can't do? You can always check the Users Permissions guide for a full breakdown of what each role (Owner/Admin, Manager, Member, Technician) has access to across Ply.
➡️ Using an Integration (ServiceTitan, HouseCall Pro, or FieldEdge)?
HouseCall Pro: technicians assigned to jobs in HCP are automatically assigned in Ply as well. See Connecting HouseCall Pro to Ply for the First Time!.
ServiceTitan: Ply can match inventory to technician trucks using the "Use Tech Trucks as Default Location" setting, which matches by user email address across both systems. See Integrating ServiceTitan with Ply.
FieldEdge: technician linking is not part of the integration yet; it's planned for a future update. See FieldEdge + Ply: How the Integration Works.
➡️ Best practices
✅ Assign only one technician per job whenever possible.
This is the single most reliable way to guarantee materials get deducted from the correct truck rather than falling back to the warehouse.
✅ Match user emails exactly between Ply and your FSM.
Both the HouseCall Pro auto-assignment and the ServiceTitan "Use Tech Trucks as Default Location" matching depend on the technician's email being identical in both systems , a small mismatch (typo, different domain) will silently break the match.
✅ If you're on ServiceTitan, have Technicians (not Managers/Admins) add or transfer materials on jobs.
Ply currently maps technician IDs to ServiceTitan invoice line items by email, but only for users with a Technician role in Ply. If a Manager or Admin adds materials instead, the ST invoice can get stuck needing manual tech assignment before it can post.
➡️ Common issues & fixes
"Materials are being deducted from the warehouse instead of the technician's truck."
This almost always comes down to Response Location setup or having more than one technician on the job, see Understanding Location Response for Integrations for the full troubleshooting checklist.
"A ServiceTitan invoice won't post because the tech isn't assigned to the material line items."
This happens when a Manager or Admin (not a Technician) added the materials to the job — see the best practice above. Have a Technician-role user with a matching email add or transfer the materials instead.
"I need to reassign several jobs at once, but I can only do it one at a time."
That's correct today, bulk reassignment isn't currently supported. There's an open feature request for this, you can add your vote here: Be able to re-assign multiple jobs at once.
"A technician works across multiple business units, but I can only give them one role." Today, a technician has a single role rather than per-business-unit roles. There's an open feature request for this, you can add your vote here: Add an ability for technician to have multiple business unit role.
"I want someone to see job details and material usage without giving them a full Manager role."
There isn't a dedicated read-only role for this today. There's an open feature request for a "Job Viewer" role with full job visibility and read-only material consumption tracking, you can add your vote here: New user role: "Job Viewer".
➡️ FAQs
Can I assign a user who isn't a Technician to a job?
Yes, any user in your account can be assigned, but keep in mind that role affects downstream behavior like FSM sync matching (see the ServiceTitan note above).
Does removing a technician from a job affect materials already assigned to it?
No,removing or changing the assigned technician doesn't retroactively change materials already added to the job.
Will FieldEdge technician assignment ever sync automatically like HouseCall Pro? It's planned for a future update, but not part of the integration today — check FieldEdge + Ply: How the Integration Works for the current state.
