SureStock Cost Types Explained: Client Cost, Business Cost & Supplier Price

A breakdown of the different cost types in SureStock, what each one means, how to set them up, and how they relate to one another.

➡️ The Cost Types in SureStock

SureStock has three costs (or prices) you can track for each material. The two most important ones in your catalog are Cost to the Client and Cost to the Business, and there's also the Supplier Price.

➡️ Cost to the Business

This is what it costs your company to buy a material. In other words, it's your own cost as a business.

➡️ Cost to the Client

This is what you charge your clients for that material. It's your price with the markup built in.

➡️ How to Set Up These Costs

1. Sync from your FSM
If your SureStock account is integrated with an FSM (ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro) and you already have those costs configured there, SureStock will pull them in for you. Both Cost to the Business and Cost to the Client can sync from your FSM.

2. Set them manually
If those costs are at $0 in your FSM, or they aren't configured at all, you can set them yourself:

  • Edit one by one: open the material in the catalog and edit each Cost to the Client and Cost to the Business directly.

  • Bulk edit: edit both costs across multiple materials at once.

  • Bulk update: from the catalog, click the three dots > Bulk upload/update > Update existing. Download your current catalog, edit the costs in Excel, and upload it back.

➡️ Editing Costs Globally

You can update costs across your entire catalog at once using Global Price Editing. This lets you apply a percentage increase to your costs.

⚠️ The key thing to know is that it's truly global: it applies to every material, not a selected group. For example, if you have 500 materials and set Cost to the Client to increase by 5%, all 500 will update. This applies to both Cost to the Client and Cost to the Business.

➡️ Supplier Price

Supplier Price lives under Prices & Suppliers inside each material, and it's where you register your suppliers' prices. It has nothing to do with Cost to the Business, the two may or may not match, depending on what your last purchase actually cost.

For Ferguson-integrated materials, you'll see the connected supplier (Ferguson Inc) listed automatically, along with the account it's tied to. Click Change if you need to switch which account this material pulls pricing from.

You can also register additional suppliers for the same material by clicking Add Supplier, useful if you buy this item from more than one vendor and want to compare or track pricing across suppliers, not just Ferguson.

These Prices & Suppliers entries are what connect to Smart Suppliers and Preferred Suppliers.

You can view every change to a material's supplier price in the Price History tab, including automatic changes. Only changes within the selected date range are displayed.

➡️ Cost Layers

Cost Layers let SureStock track each purchase of a material at its own cost, instead of overwriting a single flat cost every time you buy more.

If you buy the same material at different prices over time (for example, 2 units at $2, then 3 units of the same material at $1), Cost Layers keeps each batch as a separate "layer" so your inventory valuation reflects what you actually paid, rather than one blended/overwritten number.

➡️ Common Issues

"My Cost to the Client or Cost to the Business shows $0."
This usually means it wasn't configured in your FSM, or your FSM sync hasn't populated it yet. Set it manually using one of the options above (single edit, bulk edit, or bulk upload).

"I ran Global Price Editing and it changed more materials than I expected."
That's expected behavior, Global Price Editing applies to your entire catalog, not a selected subset. If you only want to update specific materials, use the bulk edit option on a filtered selection instead.

"Supplier Price and Cost to Business don't match for this material."
That's normal. Supplier Price is what's registered under Prices & Suppliers for that vendor, Cost to Business reflects your last purchase cost. They can diverge if your last purchase happened at a different price than what's currently registered.

➡️ FAQs

Is Cost to the Client calculated automatically based on Cost to the Business?
Not by default, you can set it manually using any of the methods above. If you want SureStock to automatically raise pricing based on a margin goal, check out Margin Monitor, which handles that calculation for you.

Can I edit costs globally?
Yes. Use Global Price Editing to apply a percentage change across your whole catalog at once. Keep in mind it affects every material, not just a selected group.
